Project Overview
Winton Homes is proud to be an active participant in the BC Housing Level Up Manufacturers roundtable project, an initiative dedicated to revolutionizing the way we think about and build mid-rise residential buildings. By focusing on prefabrication techniques and standardized designs, this project aims to make significant strides in solving the housing crisis in British Columbia.
A Collaborative Effort for Change
Recently, Winton Homes had the privilege of sending Doug Rooke, General Manager, and Trevor Hedstrom, Design Manager, to a pivotal meeting that brought together key players in the construction and housing sectors. The meeting was led by BC Housing and Metro Vancouver, with Scius Advisory steering the project management efforts. During this session, participants discussed the overarching goals of creating pre-approved template designs that could streamline the construction of mid-rise residential buildings.
Innovation Through Integration
A highlight of the meeting was the demonstration of the KOPE platform, presented by Dayle Zielentino. This innovative tool showcases how prefabricated elements can be seamlessly integrated into Building Information Modeling (BIM) models, optimizing the design for manufacturing and ensuring each component fits perfectly within the project’s specifications. The platform’s capabilities in applying products to projects and generating necessary drawings were particularly impressive, offering a glimpse into the future of efficient construction practices.
Focused Discussions for a Standardized Future
Key topics of discussion included the integration of Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) systems, the standardization of panel designs, and the crucial balance between risk management and design flexibility. These conversations underscored the importance of aligning industry practices with the evolving needs of urban development while considering regional specificities.
Moving Forward Together
As the project moves towards a proof of concept due by mid-August, breakout groups have been formed to delve deeper into panel design and assembly criteria. The urgency of these developments speaks to the commitment of all participants to drive meaningful change in the housing sector.
Winton's Commitment to Innovation and Community
Winton Homes is committed to contributing to community-enhancing projects like the BC Housing Level Up initiative. By participating in these discussions and aligning our practices with innovative prefabrication techniques, we not only aim to address the immediate needs of housing but also ensure the sustainability and efficiency of building practices in the future.
